Study Analysis Reveals Obesity Is Capable Of Reducing Lifetime For Up To Ten Years
Date: 18th March 2009
A specific analysis of 57 studies including 900,000 people makes it apparent that becoming obese to a higher level is capable of reducing your lifespan for up to ten years. The study was undertaken partially by Sir Richard Peto, an epidemiologist of the Oxford University and the definite results obtained from the study are available online in the journal “The Lancet”.
Sir Richard Peto and his team of researchers who undertook the study, reveal that they initiated it to evaluate the association between mortality and Body Mass Index (BMI) or how the BMI of a person affects his mortality. The researchers started the experiment by enrolling individuals from Western Europe as well as North America and a total of 894,576 people took part in the study.
The average BMI of all individuals taking part in the study was 25 and most of the participants were enrolled for the study in 1979. Altogether, it was known that most of the people taking part in the study were aged 46 when the study was first initiated. However, in the study, the researchers also attempted to inquire into how smoking affected the association between BMI and mortality and also how obesity in a person influenced his risk of death from certain factors.
The researchers, including Sir Richard Peto and his associates, did not take deaths into account in the five years` analysis so that their analysis to exclude people who have become thin on account of certain diseases.
Pertaining to the results of the study, Ali Mokdad, professor of global health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle, states that the outcome of the study is indeed frightening and specific consideration is to be given to it.
